Call to shoulder each other's burdens Faith That Carries Others  Bible Reading: Mark 2:1-12 Key Verse Vs 5 “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven you.’” — Gospel of Mark 2:5    DEVOTION “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can.” -John Wesley In Mark 2:1–12, we witness a beautiful picture of shared faith and compassionate action. The paralytic could not reach Jesus by himself, but four faithful friends refused to let his weakness become the end of his story. They carried him, climbed the roof, and lowered him before Christ. Their determination reveals the heart of true Christian community: we are called to shoulder one another’s burdens. “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.”(Albert Schweitzer) Often in life, we meet people who are spiritually, emotionally, or physically paralyzed—unable to move forward. Some are weighed down by sorro...

Love Transforms Communities and Relationships Bible Reading:  Rom 12: 9-21 Key Verse Vs 16  Vs 16 Live in harmony with one another.   DEVOTION Today’s theme for reflection is ‘Love in action.’ The word ‘love’ is an overused word and as such it has lost its real meaning and its action in our daily living. In English we only have one word for love, but  Greeks have seven words to express different emotions involved in love such as eros, philia, ludus, agape, pragma, philotimo, and storge. C. S. Lewis in his book, ‘Four Loves,’ writes about emotions involved in  friendship, affection, Eros and charity. Charity is the gift love of God; Gift love and agape are supreme aspects of love. The most important understanding of love is our knowledge and faith that “God is love” (I Jn 4:8). When Pharisees questioned Jesus about the greatest commandments, Jesus reduced the whole commandments to just two: “Love your God with all your hear and all your soul and with all y...

Faithful Kindness that restores Bible Reading:  2 Samuel 9: 1-13 Key Verse Vs 3 The king then asked him, “Is anyone still alive from Saul’s family? If so, I want to show God’s kindness to them.” (2 Samuel 9:3)”    DEVOTION In the bible, as we read about David & Jonathan, we realize they are more than best friends - they are like brothers and fiercely loyal to each other. Jonathan protected David from his father, King Saul and after Jonathan was killed, David returned the kindness shown to him by Jonathan by taking care of Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.  The interaction between David & Mephibosheth happens to be one of the greatest examples of God’s kindness and mercy as demonstrated through David. When we read this passage, we can picture David as God the Father, Jonathan as the Son, Jesus Christ and Mephibosheth as ourselves. The kindness that David shows Mephibosheth is beyond grace and compassion. David is actively seeking out anyone from Saul’s...

Justice and Mercy: Caring for one another Bible Reading:  Zechariah:7 : 4 -10 Key Verse Vs 8 Verse: 8:  And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah: “this is what the Lord almighty says: Administer true justice; show justice ,show mercy and compassion to one another”.   DEVOTION   In this bible passage, we find a  poignant reminder about the intertwined nature  of  justice and mercy, emphasizing out duty to care for another. Prophet  was speaking to a community that had been questioning  the practices and rituals they observed, particularly concerning fasting and mourning. God's response, delivered through Zechariah, reveals deeper truths about what God  truly desires  from His people. JUSTICE AND  MERCY: A DIVINE EXPECTATION  (4-7)        Here we see, God instructs the prophet to remind the people that the rituals should not merely be an outward expression, but should reflect their inn...

Restoration and Mutual Support Bible Reading: Galatians 6:1 to 10. Key Verse Vs 1 1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ DEVOTION In his Epistle to the Galatians,  Apostle Paul articulates a communal framework that transcends mere legalism, proposing instead a rigorous system of mutual responsibility and restoration. Galatians 6:1-10 serves as a foundational text for understanding Christian social ethics, moving beyond individual piety toward a collective mandate. By examining the metaphors of "mending" and "burden-bearing," one uncovers a sophisticated model for maintaining community cohesion through grace rather than exclusion. The passage begins with a directive toward restoration, using a concept often applied in ancient medical contexts to the setting of...

Partakers in the Ministry of God  Bible Reading: Deuteronomy  1:12-18 Key Verse Vs 12 12 How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife?   DEVOTION The Book of Deuteronomy (retelling of the law) primarily consists of the three farewell addresses by Moses—servant of the LORD (34:5) (YHWH), the only true God, like no other (4:32-40, Isaiah 44:6-8), and led the people of Israel out of 430 years of Egyptian bondage—to the new generation of Israelites born during the 40-year wandering in the wilderness, following the older generation that perished in the wilderness, except for Caleb and Joshua, as penalty for rebelling against the LORD, and unbelief (Hebrews 3:7-19). The Exodus generation refused to enter the Promised Land, fearing the people, disobeying the LORD, not believing in His promise to fight for them like in Egypt, and sustaining them in the wilderness (Numbers 13-14).  The purpose of Moses’s addresses in the plains of Moab (36:13) ...

Be Transformed by Compassion Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:25–32 Key Verse Vs 32 V32“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”    DEVOTION Life moves fast, and usually, it’s the people closest to us who feel the brunt of our stress. We see division everywhere—on our screens and in our streets—and it’s tempting to just shut down or lash out. But here’s the thing: we aren’t powerless. We have an incredible opportunity every day to influence the atmosphere of the spaces we’re in. It starts with how we speak and how we listen. When we trade bitterness for the kind of grace Christ shows us, we’re doing something radical. We’re proving that compassion is stronger than the chaos around us. This isn't just about being "polite"; it's about being "members of one body." Paul’s instructions to the Ephesians are strikingly practical and remind us that our words should be used to build others up according to their n...

Call to be Compassionate Bible Reading: Mark 1:40-45 Key Verse Vs 41 V41“Moved with compassion, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him,” I will; be clean”.   DEVOTION This passage records one of the most powerful and astonishing miracles performed by Jesus, revealing not only His divine authority but also His deep compassion for humanity. A man with leprosy came to Jesus. In his desperation, he violated all the required regulations of exclusion and fell before Him in humble adoration, saying, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Without doubting Jesus’ authority and power, he risked stoning, humiliation, and even death to reach the Lord. This disease is known today as Hansen’s disease. It was highly infectious and incurable in Bible times; no other disease was as feared as leprosy. HIS COMPASSION: Jesus moved with compassion, vs. 41 This moment reveals a deep, spontaneous reaction in Jesus. He did not observe the man’s suffering from a distanc...

Compassion That Bears Witness Bible Reading: 1 John 3:13-24 Key Verse Vs 23 V23 “And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us.”  DEVOTION It is so astonishing to think how the author of the three letters of John wrote these books for the people of his time, but applies directly to us who live thousands of years later. 1 John talks about the reassurance of the full access to the truth and the importance of godly living in the conscience of being God’s loved children. Chapter 3 reminds us on how hatred towards Christians began in the very first century itself (v.13); how love towards God and our fellow beings is not just a feeling, but should be evident through our actions (v.16); and how the truth of Christ alone can bring us to eternal life (v.15)- and these are parts of the 21st century spiritual warfare, too. In this loud and fast world, we tend to live in oblivion to those in need around us, fail...

Kindness That Protects and Provides Bible Reading: Ruth 2:4–20, NIV Key Verse Vs 20 He has not stopped showing  his kindness to the living and the dead. DEVOTION In Ruth 2, we see God at work through an unexpected encounter.  Ruth, a young widow from Moab, has left her homeland out of loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi and trust in the God of Israel. She arrives in Bethlehem vulnerable, grieving, and without means, unsure of her future. To survive, she gathers leftover grain in the fields, a provision God’s law makes for the poor and widows. Boaz, a wealthy and respected landowner and a relative of Naomi, notices her. Instead of ignoring her or using his position for advantage, Boaz responds with protective kindness. He welcomes her, instructs his workers to treat her respectfully, offers her food and water, and even orders extra grain to be left for her. His actions create a safe space and provide for someone on the brink of despair, making God’s provision tangibl...

God’s Compassion That Calls Us to Obedience Bible Reading:  Deuteronomy 4:31-40 Key Verse Vs 40 V39-40“Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the LORD your God gives you for all time.”. DEVOTION In Deuteronomy 4:31-40, we see that Moses speaks to the people of Israel on the edge of the Promised Land. These words come at a pivotal moment - after years of wandering, after rebellion, after judgment, and yet right before blessing. Moses reminds them who God is and why they must respond to Him. Moses reveals that our obedience is not a way to "earn" God’s love; rather, it is the only logical response to a God who has already loved us with an unparalleled compassion. 1: God’s Compassion Revealed in History (v. 31-34) God’s compassion isn’t just ...

Compassion That Forgives and Reconciles Bible Reading: Genesis 45:1-15 Key Verse Vs 4.5 V4, 5“Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come close to me.’ When they had done so, he said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.’”    DEVOTION The latter part of Genesis recounts the story of Joseph, once betrayed by his family, but ultimately finds himself in a prestigious position. In today’s passage, we hear of Joseph’s reunion with his brothers. One would think this meeting would be about retaliation, but it was not. In fact, we see what complete forgiveness means and the purpose of reconciliation. Complete forgiveness means that there is unshakeable trust in the Lord. Joseph “could no longer control himself” and weeps because he recognizes God’s plans in that moment (Genesis 45:1). We live in a broken world, so...

Forgiven to forgive Bible Reading:  Ephesians  2:11-22 Key Verse Vs 13 V13“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”   DEVOTION “I have a right to get the information without further explanation,” a student wrote bluntly to a teacher. Hurt and offended, he prepared for yet another confrontation with the student. But he received a gentle prompt: “Provide what is asked for” from a reputed physicist, confined to an electric wheelchair for decades. He once testified that his faith came from the heart. He was grateful to God for forgiving his sins and allowing him to ‘walk’ with Him. Scripture reminds us: forgiveness is not optional. Jesus teaches, “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12). Through Christ, our debts were paid, and we were brought near to God (Colossians 2:13–14; Ephesians 2:13). Having received such mercy, how can we withhold it from others? In the parable of the u...

Lent for transformation. Bible Reading: Romans 11:33-12:2  Key Verse Vs 12:1 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.   DEVOTION The Book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul, to the Christians in Rome. The Christians in Rome were both Jews and Gentiles. As Paul addressed the Romans, we cannot overlook the fact that the key verse for today's devotion has an overshadowing from Chapter11, verses 11- 32, where Paul highlights that it is only through God’s infinite Mercy that we have been reconciled to Him, Jews and Gentiles alike. Though Salvation came to us Gentiles, through the bloodline of the Jews, God by his abounding Merc...

Jesus Christ Who Transforms:  Bible Reading:  John 2:1-11 Key Verse Vs 9 Verse 9: “And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.”   DEVOTION The Identity of Jesus in John's Gospel One of the most significant features of the Gospel of John is the repeated use of Jesus’ “I am” statements. Through these declarations, Jesus communicates His true identity to His listeners. He proclaims Himself as the bread of life, the light of the world, the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus is the true vine, the resurrection and the life. Only He has the power to transform lives into new creations. Whoever encounters Him experiences a complete turnaround, becoming a new creation and embracing His words, teachings, and commandments as the guiding principles of their lives. Jesus can also transform us if we are willing to surrender and obey. The Apostle Paul stands as a prominent example—once transformed by Christ, he became the great apostle to the Ge...

Ambassadors of Reconciliation Bible Reading:    Bible portion:  2 Corinthians  5:16-21 Key Verse Vs 20 Key Verse: V 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God.   DEVOTION What is an ambassador? An ambassador is one who is entrusted with a message from a king of government and is faithfully expected to convey the same message in the same tone to officials and nations. Paul reminds us that we are ambassadors of our King Jesus, who is entrusting us to convey this message of reconciliation to the world. Our lives, words, and actions are meant to echo God’s invitation: “Be reconciled to God.” This is not a message of condemnation but of restoration. Not a message of distance but of nearness. Not a message of earning but of receiving.  The portion begins with the reminder that we no longer ought to look through human eyes. Reconciliation begins with God, not with ...

New Life and spirit through Christ Bible Reading:   Ezekiel 36:24-36 Key Verse Vs 26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” – Ezekiel 36:26   DEVOTION In Ezekiel 36, God speaks to a people who had failed Him. Israel had turned away, sinned, and faced the consequences of exile. Yet in the middle of their brokenness, God makes an incredible promise of hope—not based on their merit, but on His mercy. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” (Ezekiel 36:26). This promise reveals the heart of God: He is not merely interested in external reform, but in deep, inward transformation. God makes it clear that restoration will come “for the sake of My holy name” (v. 22). Restoration begins not with our goodness, but with God’s grace. He is the One who gathers, cleanses, removes the heart of stone, and replaces it with a heart of flesh. God does not merely improve behavior; He transforms the heart. A heart of stone is hard, resistan...

Be Cleansed by the Redeemer Bible Reading:    Psalm 51 Key Verse Vs 10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me”. Vs 10 DEVOTION Psalm 51 is very familiar to all of us. As Sunday school students, most of us learned this psalm by heart and recited it countless times; and even now most of us recite it on a daily basis. This psalm occupies a significant place in our worship. In our liturgy this psalm assumes a prominent role in almost all our sacraments. In fact, Psalm 51 has an important place in the liturgies of most mainline churches. This psalm is referred to as the psalm of Repentance or Penitential psalm. The background of this psalm is detailed in II Samuel chapters 11 and 12. King David committed adultery with Bathsheba who was Uriah’s wife. David then tried to cover up his act by having Uriah killed in the war. He was an adulterer and murderer at the same time. This psalm was written by King David as a confession, a cry for cleansi...

From brokenness to Hope Bible Reading:     Lamentations  5:15-22 Key verse :   Vs 19    Vs 19  But you  O lord  reign for ever. Your throne endures to all generations. DEVOTION The book of lamentations  is a collection of five laments bewailing the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. Jerusalem’s broken walls mirror the broken spirits of the community.  What was once thought to be strong and stable now looks empty and weak. They have lost hope  But  God does not abandon them fully. He wants them to recognize their loss, their weakness and same and turn to God. Faith always begins with reconciliation and  awareness of truth. Lamentations ends with the plaintive cry for restorations Vs  22 reads “ unless  you have utterly rejected us  and are angry with us beyond measure. Even when they lament they have hope in their God. Vs 19 reads   O Lord reign for ever: your throne endures for gener...
