Kindness That Protects and Provides

Bible Reading: Ruth 2:4–20, NIV

Key Verse Vs 20

He has not stopped showing  his kindness to the living and the dead.

DEVOTION

In Ruth 2, we see God at work through an unexpected encounter.
Ruth, a young widow from Moab, has left her homeland out of loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi and trust in the God of Israel. She arrives in Bethlehem vulnerable, grieving, and without means, unsure of her future.
To survive, she gathers leftover grain in the fields, a provision God’s law makes for the poor and widows. Boaz, a wealthy and respected landowner and a relative of Naomi, notices her. Instead of ignoring her or using his position for advantage, Boaz responds with protective kindness. He welcomes her, instructs his workers to treat her respectfully, offers her food and water, and even orders extra grain to be left for her. His actions create a safe space and provide for someone on the brink of despair, making God’s provision tangible through human generosity.
Boaz’s example shows that true kindness is practical, intentional, and protective.
We can follow this example in our daily lives. Imagine a new attendee at our church, perhaps a family or student new to the country, standing alone after worship. Greeting them warmly, introducing them to others, and including them in fellowship are more than mere friendliness; they protect them from loneliness and reflect God’s love in action.
When Ruth returns home with her harvest, Naomi recognizes God’s hand at work in Boaz.
Through simple acts of kindness, we can become God’s provision in human form, making a real difference in the lives of those around us.

PRAYER

Lord, help me see those who need kindness today. Give me a generous heart and a willing spirit, to let Your love become visible through my actions. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

A small act of kindness can become God’s way of lifting someone out of loneliness or fear. Never underestimate the power of noticing someone and choosing to care.
