Living in the Year of Jubilee

Bible Reading: Isaiah 61:1-6

Key verse 1

Vs1:… because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.

DEVOTION

When Jesus read from Isaiah 61 in the synagogue at Nazareth, He declared that this prophecy was fulfilled in Him. Yet He stopped before the words, “the day of vengeance of our God,” because His first coming was to announce God's favour, grace, and salvation. Today, we live in that season of divine favour, what Isaiah calls “the acceptable year of the Lord.”
The imagery behind this passage comes from the Year of Jubilee in Leviticus 25. Every fiftieth year, debts were cancelled, slaves were freed, and families received back their inheritance. It was a powerful picture of restoration and new beginnings. Through Christ, this has become a spiritual reality for every believer. Our debt of sin has been paid in full, our bondage has been broken, and we have been welcomed into God's family as His sons, daughters, kings, and priests.
Yet our calling is not merely to celebrate this identity. As the Church, the Bride of Christ, we are commissioned to continue the ministry that Jesus announced in Nazareth: to proclaim good news to the poor, bind up the broken-hearted, proclaim freedom for the captives, and release those who sit in spiritual darkness.
Therefore, while we rejoice in the freedom of our spiritual Jubilee, we must also become agents of that freedom in the lives of others. We are called to be a refuge for those trapped in spiritual prisons, a place of healing for the broken-hearted, and a voice for those who feel unseen, unheard, and forgotten.
Only as we embrace both the privilege and responsibility of our Jubilee inheritance do we truly fulfill our calling as ministers of the Kingdom of God, displaying His glory and extending His redeeming love to a world in need.

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for setting us free from the bondage of sin and restoring what was lost. Help me to live as an instrument of Your grace, bringing hope, healing, and freedom to those around me. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

As we have freely received, let us freely give; grace upon grace.
