The Transfiguration of our Lord

Bible Reading: St. Luke 9:28-36

Key verse:  
V 35 : “A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.”

DEVOTION

The Transfiguration reveals Christ’s divine glory, prefiguring His resurrection and the renewal of creation. Luke notes that Jesus ascended the mountain to pray. While praying, His appearance altered and His clothes became dazzling white, highlighting prayer as our vital conduit of divine communion.

Moses and Elijah appeared beside Him, speaking of His impending departure in Jerusalem, representing the Law and the Prophets witnessing God's redemptive plan. When a cloud overshadowed them, a voice declared, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” This divine mandate establishes that total obedience is the core marker of authentic discipleship.

In the Mar Thoma Church tradition, the Feast of the Transfiguration (Koodaara Perunnal) calls us to profound spiritual renewal. As Metropolitan Juhanon Mar Thoma notes in his autobiography, Reminiscences, the mountaintop experience is never meant for permanent withdrawal. Instead, it equips us with the light of Christ to confront the valleys of human suffering, sickness, and injustice. St. Ephrem the Syrian reflects that this divine glimpse was purposefully granted to sustain the disciples' faith during Christ’s voluntary crucifixion.

Following Jesus means walking down from spiritual ecstasy back into the dusty reality of the valley. In alignment with our Mar Thoma heritage, our liturgy must meet life. The uncreated light received in worship must be carried into our daily vocations, transforming mundane service into an act of divine love.

 

PRAYER

"Lord Jesus, thank You for Your transforming glory. Shine Your light into our hearts and change our weakness. As we step into the valleys of our world, grant us grace to obey Your voice, carry Your light into the shadows, and turn our daily service into a living liturgy of divine love. Amen.”

PRIESTHOOD: THE ANOINTED MINISTRY Exodus 40:12-16 Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting... wash them with water.
