 Identity in Christ marked by Baptism

Bible Reading:  1 Corinthians 12:12-20

Key verse:  20

: “As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” 1 Cor. 12:20


DEVOTION

This passage reminds us of the creation story we read in Genesis, where God uniquely crafted us in His own divine image. While we all share this Holy reflection, God intentionally made every single person different. However, sin fractured our relationship with God and distorted the original design. Let's look at how the sacrament of baptism serves as a divine restoration.

1. Reclaiming the divine image through Baptism
In Genesis, God created human beings in His own image, yet He made every individual unique. Sin distorted that original design, but the sacrament of baptism acts as a divine restoration. Through baptism, we publicly identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This sacred act does not erase our individual differences; instead, it purifies them. Baptism allows us to reclaim our true identity, mirroring the image of God as we were always meant to do.
2. Diversity of Parts, Unity in the Spirit
A human body cannot function if every part is an eye or a hand. The Apostle Paul uses this analogy to show that our differences are intentional and essential to the Church. While we all possess distinct personalities, backgrounds, and gifts, the Holy Spirit brings us into perfect alignment. Through the Holy Spirit, our diverse lives are knit into a single, cohesive body. The ultimate goal of our faith is to live out this spiritual unity, proving that many different parts can function beautifully as one in Christ. 
God never intended for us to be clones of one another, but He also didn't design us to live divided. Through baptism, we recover our true identity in Christ and rely on the holy spirit to knot us together.

PRAYER

Heavenly father, thank you for creating us uniquely and thank you for the gift of baptism which restores our identity and unites us with you. Help us to celebrate our differences and guard us against divisions. In Jesus name we pray, Amen


THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

God did not create us to be divided, but to complete one another as one body in Christ.

PRIESTHOOD: THE ANOINTED MINISTRY Exodus 40:12-16 Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting... wash them with water.
