Mission -Compassion in Action -The Fast That Pleases God

Bible Reading: Isaiah 58:6-10

Key verse 6-8

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to lose the chains of injustice… to share your food with the hungry… Then your light will break forth like the dawn.” — Isaiah 58:6–8

DEVOTION

A man once fasted regularly, believing he honored God. One day, he passed a hungry woman and did nothing. Later, he couldn’t forget it. He asked himself: What good is a fast that empties the stomach but leaves the heart unchanged? This question reflects a struggle many of us face—can our devotion look sincere outwardly while remaining unchanged within?
Isaiah 58 addresses this directly. God speaks to people who fasted but ignored justice and compassion. Their worship did not match their actions. True fasting is not just going without food—it means breaking injustice, caring for the oppressed, and meeting real needs.
William Wilberforce lived this out. His faith led him to fight the slave trade for years. His devotion showed through action, reminding us that honoring God requires more than ritual—it calls for mercy and courage. Isaiah’s message is clear: true fasting is a life shaped by justice, mercy, and compassion. When our hearts align with God, our actions reflect Him. Devotion is measured not by what we avoid, but by how we love and serve others. We may wonder why heaven is not coming down to intervene in our circumstances? We must understand that a vertical experience with God happens when the horizontal touch with others happen. We must become a flow through for others. God says when we reach out to others, He will reach out to us.
So what does this look like today? Where might our spiritual habits be disconnected from how we treat people? Who needs compassion—and what step can we take? It may mean sharing a meal, listening to someone overlooked, helping a struggling parent, or speaking up against injustice. It could be giving generously, volunteering, mentoring, or offering encouragement. Even small acts—patience, forgiveness, kindness—reflect God’s heart.
Here are a few simple steps for today: Notice: Ask God to show you someone in need. Respond: Take one clear action—give, serve, speak, or encourage. Reflect:Consider how your actions matched God’s heart. Repeat:Make compassion a daily habit.
These actions matter to God. They are the fast He desires. When we live this way, His promise follows. His presence draws near, our lives shine, and He guides us.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, align my heart with Yours. Teach me to live out true devotion through justice, mercy, and compassion. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me courage to respond with love. Help me reflect Your heart today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
