Break the Chain: Finding Freedom from Addictions

Bible Reading: :Colossians 3:1-11

Key verse 2

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” — Colossians 3:2

DEVOTION

Addiction is a powerful chain that binds people physically, emotionally, and spiritually. While many associate addiction with drugs or alcohol, other forms of bondage include social media dependence, gaming, unhealthy relationships, anger, gossip, materialism, and habits that gradually gain control over our lives. What often begins as a simple desire or pastime becomes a chain that weakens our relationship with God, hinders spiritual growth, and damages our relationships with others.
Colossians 3:1–11 provides a clear roadmap to freedom. In Colossians 3:2, Paul urges believers, “Set your minds on things above.” True freedom begins with a change in focus. When our minds are consumed by worldly pleasures and unhealthy desires, destructive habits can take root. However, when we intentionally fix our thoughts on Christ, He renews our minds and transforms our hearts. Paul further reminds us to “put to death” our old sinful nature and embrace a new life in Christ.
Breaking free from addiction is not merely about stopping harmful behavior; it is about replacing it with a Christ-centered life. By adopting our new identity in Christ, we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. This ongoing journey of transformation is strengthened through prayer, Bible study, and the encouragement of fellow believers. As we draw closer to Christ, His strength becomes greater than our weaknesses, enabling us to overcome the forces that once held us captive.
If you are struggling with addiction, surrender your burden to God. Our identity is not defined by our failures or struggles but by Christ’s redeeming love. Set our mind on Him, He will break every chain and lead us into lasting freedom.
Prayer

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, help us fix our thoughts on You. Break every chain that holds us back from Your will and strengthen us to walk daily in Your freedom. Amen.

Thought for the DAY

The chains of addiction may seem strong, but the power of Christ is stronger.
