Call and Commission to be Christ’s disciples

Bible Reading:  Matthew 4:17–22

Key verse:  19


 19. “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 

DEVOTION

When Jesus began His public ministry, His first message was simple yet powerful: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Verse 17). Immediately after proclaiming this message, He called ordinary fishermen, Peter, Andrew, James, and John to become His disciples.
These men were not religious leaders or scholars. They were hardworking fishermen engaged in their daily routines. Yet Jesus saw in them the potentials to become instruments for God’s kingdom. His call was not merely an invitation to learn but a summons to a transformed life and a new purpose.
In scripture, it says that they “immediately left their nets” and followed Him. Their obedience was prompt and wholehearted. They left behind security, familiar routines, and personal ambitions because they recognized the authority and worthiness of the One who called them.
Jesus still extends the same call today. Discipleship is more than believing in Christ; it is following Him daily, learning from Him, obeying His Word, and participating in His mission. He calls us to leave behind whatever hinders our relationship with Him; whether it is fear, comfort, pride, or worldly distractions.
The promise Jesus gave to His first disciples remains true for us. When we faithfully follow Him, He shapes our character, strengthens our faith, and equips us to influence others for His kingdom
The question before every believer is simple: Will we answer His call and follow Him wholeheartedly.

                                                             PRAYER

Heavenly Father, Thank You for calling us into a relationship with Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to hear His voice clearly and respond with willing hearts. Give us the courage to leave behind anything that keeps us from fully following You. Shape us into faithful disciples who reflect Your love and share the good news with others. May our lives bring glory to Your name and help others find their way to Christ. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the DAY

Jesus does not call the qualified; He qualifies those who answer His call and follow Him faithfully.

PRIESTHOOD: THE ANOINTED MINISTRY Exodus 40:12-16 Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting... wash them with water. Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, anoint him and consecrate him so he may serve me as priest (Exodus 40: 12-13). Priesthood among the people of God was a divine command and initiation. God wanted some people to be separated for the special ministry among his people. God appointed Aaron and his descendants to take up this kind of ministry among the people of God.
