Communion that becomes mission

Bible Reading: :n John 17:20-26

Key Verse: 26

I made known to them your name  and I will continue to make it known....

DEVOTION

These are the concluding verses of the High Priestly prayer of Jesus. After praying for himself and his disciples he prays for the future believers who would believe in his name through the word of His disciples . His prayer is that they may be united just as he is united with his Father. Jesus was filled with the Father’s love, glorified as the sacrificial Lamb slain before the foundation of the world, and in the fullness of time revealed in the world ,as the true Light spoken by the Father at the beginning of creation. Communion with Jesus is of utmost importance for us to fulfill God’s mission in this world. God created mankind in His image and gave the command to be fruitful and multiply to dispel the darkness. However, the first man Adam fell prey to the deceptive tactics of darkness and entire mankind was translated into the world of darkness with the ultimate penalty of death.   Jesus Christ, the perfect image of God, entered the world and broke the power of darkness and death that had held humanity captive. He set the captives free to continue God’s mission of being the light of the world. Through Jesus Christ, believers are united with the Father, and their unity reveals God’s love to the world. Jesus addresses God as the Righteous Father, who sent him as the light of the world. The sacrificial love Jesus displayed is the same love that should fill and unite every believer so that God’s mission may be fulfilled in this world.

                                            PRAYER

God, fill us with your sacrificial love to be united as believers, so that we can fulfill your mission in this world of sin and darkness.
