God’s Love: An Unshakeable Foundation

Bible Reading:    Romans 8:31-39

Key verse "What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all" (Rom. 8:31)

DEVOTION

In Romans 8:31-39, Paul asks a powerful question: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” These words anchor us in an unshakeable truth—God’s power is unmatched. God’s glory is unmatched. God’s majesty is unmatched. God’s strength is unmatched. God’s awe is unmatched. God’s might is unmatched. There is nothing in this world or out of this world that our God cannot overcome. As we magnify God’s power and majesty, we must also understand that the foundation for all of the Almighty’s godliness is love. God’s love is what drives His power, His glory, His majesty, His strength, and His awe. God’s love is wider than the widest ocean, deeper than the deepest sea, vaster and more all-encompassing than anything you or I can imagine. We exist only because He loved us enough to show us grace. We survive only because He loves us enough to show us mercy. We look toward eternity only because He loved us enough to redeem us.
When we grasp a true understanding of the power of God’s love, we realize that His love is the firm foundation upon which we can build our lives. No matter what challenges or uncertainties we face, God’s love is steadfast, unwavering, and victorious. Paul reminds us that God’s love was fully demonstrated in Christ’s sacrifice. “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (v. 32). The cross is proof of God’s boundless love, a love so deep that it overcomes our sin, breaks down every barrier, and offers us eternal security. When life shakes us, we can hold firmly to this truth - God’s love is greater than any trial, temptation, or trouble.
The passage goes on to list every possible challenge: “trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword” (v. 35). These are not just theoretical problems, but were real threats to Paul and the early church. Today, we may be far removed from the world Paul lived in, yet, you and I are still subject to these very same hardships that Paul experienced. Paul proclaims with unwavering confidence that “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (v. 37) and this should be our rallying cry as well. This victory is not based on our strength but on the foundation of God’s love, which gives us the courage to face life’s storms with faith and peace.
Today, we often feel like life conspires against us, and sickness, loss, broken relationships, or fears about the future can feel overwhelming. However, Paul’s declaration reminds us that nothing can “separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (v. 39). Not the past, not the present, not even the unknowns of the future can pull us from God’s unshakeable grip.
When faced with fear or doubt, remember that God’s love is your anchor. He is for you, so no opposition can ultimately prevail against you. His love equips you to stand firm in the face of every challenge. Knowing God’s love is unshakeable frees us to live with boldness and hope. You are more than a conqueror—not because of your strength, but because of His love. Let this inspire you to walk confidently, even though difficult seasons. God’s love is not only something to cling to; it’s something to share. As His love sustains you, allow it to overflow into the lives of others. Reach out to those who feel separated or unloved, reminding them of the foundation they can find in Christ.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for your unshakeable love. Help us trust in this foundation, live with confidence in your promises, and reflect your love to those around us. Amen.
