Women and Evangelization

Bible Reading:    Romans 16:1-12

Key verse “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people…” (Romans 16:1–2)

DEVOTION

In Romans 16, St. Paul mention many people to honor them. He highlights Phoebe, Priscilla, Mary, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Persis, Julia, and the mother of Rufus. These women were leaders, co-workers, and encouragers in the mission of Christ. Paul calls Phoebe a deacon and commends her ministry. He praises Priscilla and Aquila for risking their lives for the gospel. He acknowledges Mary for her hard work, and he honor0 women like Tryphena and Tryphosa, who “worked hard in the Lord.” In a world where women were often marginalized, Paul placed them at the very heart of evangelization.
This passage reminds us that evangelization is not confined to pulpit preaching or apostolic journeys. It is also expressed through hospitality, discipleship, mentoring, prayer, teaching, serving, and even risking one’s life for the faith. Women, then and now, play a vital role in expanding the kingdom of God. Today, as the church continues to share the Good News, we are called to remember and celebrate the contributions of women who quietly and boldly advance the gospel through mission work, community service, education, caregiving, and leadership. Their witness encourages us to live out our own calling with courage and faithfulness.
We are invited to consider how we acknowledge and support the ministry of women in our communities, recognizing their faithful service to the Lord. We are also challenged to see how, like Phoebe or Priscilla, we might actively participate in evangelization in our daily lives through words, actions, and sacrificial love. Paul’s example urges us to cultivate a spirit of encouragement, taking time to honor and uplift our fellow workers in Christ, so that together we may build up the body of Christ with unity and joy.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, we thank You for the women who faithfully served You in the early church and those who continue to serve today. May we recognize their vital role in the gospel story. Inspire us to honor one another’s contributions and strengthen us all to live as bold witnesses of Your love. Amen.
