Live as God’s Children in Love

Bible Reading:   1 John 3:1-12

Key verse: V3:1"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"

DEVOTION

As Marthomites, every Sunday we begin worship by calling God “Our Father in Heaven.” That’s not just a prayer—it’s our identity. John reminds us that being God’s children is the greatest privilege we can have.
But this identity comes with a responsibility. John says those who live in sin do not truly know God (v.6). In the Mar Thoma liturgy, we confess, “We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed.” Why do we confess every week? Because God’s children don’t stay comfortable in sin. We are called to repent, be renewed, and live differently from the world.
John also warns us not to be like Cain, who was filled with jealousy and hatred (v.12). During our Holy Qurbana, before receiving Communion, we exchange the kiss of peace as a reminder to forgive and love one another. Love is the family resemblance of God’s children.

PRAYER

"Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us Your children. Help us to reject sin, forgive others, and show Your love in our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

When people see us, do they see my Father’s love?
