Adopted into God’s Family: The Spirit of Sonship

Bible Reading:  Galatians 4:1–7

Key verse: “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” (Galatians 4:4–5)

DEVOTION

In Galatians 4:1–7, the Apostle Paul explains a foundational truth of the Christian faith —our adoption as children of God through Jesus Christ. Paul uses the image of a child heir who, though entitled to an inheritance, lives under guardians and trustees until the appointed time. Similarly, humanity, under the Law, awaited the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan.
At the fullness of time, God sent His Son—fully divine yet born of a woman and under the law—to redeem those bound by it. Jesus fulfilled the Law perfectly and offered Himself as the atoning sacrifice, freeing us from the curse of the Law (Galatians 3:13). Through Him, we receive not only forgiveness but adoption into God’s household.
This adoption is not merely a status change—it is a transformation of relationship. By the Holy Spirit, we are enabled to call God “Abba, Father”—a term of intimate trust used by Jesus Himself (Mark 14:36). This closeness with God is not achieved by our works but granted through faith in Christ (Galatians 3:26).
As sons and daughters, we are no longer slaves but heirs of God’s promises, including eternal life, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and fellowship with Christ. This truth calls us to live not in fear or bondage, but in assurance and holiness, bearing witness to our new identity.
As adopted children, we reflect the character of our Father. Our identity is not earned but received through grace. Let us walk in this truth with confidence, rejecting the slavery of guilt and performance, and embracing the joy and privilege of being heirs with Christ.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for making us Your children through Jesus. Help us to live each day knowing we are loved by You and Help us to walk in Your Spirit daily. Amen.
