Fathers, Raise Your Children in the Lord

Bible Reading:  Ephesians 6:1–4

Key verse: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4

DEVOTION

Parenting is not just a biological or social role—it is a divine calling. Ephesians 6:4 places a particular emphasis on fathers, urging them to raise their children not merely by worldly standards but in the fear and knowledge of God. This verse stands in contrast to the harsh or indifferent parenting styles of the Roman world in which Paul was writing. Instead, it echoes the character of our Heavenly Father—loving, patient, and full of grace.
“Do not provoke your children to anger” is both a caution and a calling. It invites fathers to avoid harsh criticism, unreasonable demands, or inconsistent discipline that may lead to resentment. Instead, Scripture calls for a nurturing environment, where correction is coupled with compassion, and guidance is rooted in the Word of God.
The phrase “discipline and instruction of the Lord” reflects a holistic nurturing—physical, emotional, moral, and spiritual. Fathers are to teach God’s truth not only through words but by living a life of integrity, humility, and prayerfulness. The home becomes the child’s first school of faith, where fathers model what it means to love and serve Christ.
This responsibility does not come without challenges, especially in today’s fast-paced and distracted world. But God does not call fathers to this task alone—He equips and walks alongside them. Fathers are encouraged to lean on prayer, Scripture, and the fellowship of the Church to guide their parenting journey.
As the Church stands on the foundation of faith passed from one generation to another, fathers have the sacred duty of shaping future disciples. In a world that often confuses success with godliness, we are reminded that the greatest inheritance a father can leave is a legacy of faith rooted in Christ.

PRAYER

Lord, bless all fathers with wisdom, patience, and strength. Help them lead with love, reflect Christ in word and deed, and nurture homes rooted in faith, grace, and Your peace. Amen.
