From Darkness to light: the power of purification

Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 6: 6-11

Key verse:  And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:11

DEVOTION

As we reflect on this passage, the apostle Paul reminds us that although we were once caught in sin, through the name of Jesus Christ, we have been sanctified and made new. In verses 9 and 10, Paul speaks honestly about the reality of sin and its consequences:“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”These verses serve as a powerful call for self-examination. They challenge us to recognize our own brokenness and to acknowledge that, apart from Christ, we are unable to inherit the kingdom of God.But then comes verse 11, offering a message of hope and transformation:“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”This verse highlights the heart of the gospel. It is only through Jesus that our sins are washed away. We are not defined by our past, but by the grace extended to us through His sacrifice. We are sanctified, set apart, and welcomed as children of God—not because of anything we’ve done, but because of everything Christ has done for us.As Christians, we are called to regularly reflect on this truth. Let us take time to reexamine our hearts, to remember the grace that has been poured out for us, and to live in response to that grace with humility, gratitude, and obedience.

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for Your mercy and grace. Thank you for the sacrifice of your son for our redemption, that through Jesus, we have been washed, sanctified, and justified. As we embark on our spiritual journey help us to walk in the new identity You’ve given us, not defined by past events, but by Your love and redemption. In Jesus name we pray,
Amen.
