A Journey of Motherhood - Mother’s Day
Bible Reading: John 19:25-27
Key Verse: He said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” (John 19:26-27)
DEVOTION
Mary, standing at the cross watching her son’s final moments, must have been overwhelmed with the thoughts of how her journey as the mother of our Savior Jesus Christ began and how it was coming to an end. Although Mary is witnessing her son fulfill His calling, she is perhaps torn between the plans she had for him compared to God’s plan. Mary’s journey of motherhood was filled with fear, anxiety, confusion, understanding and finally acceptance.
Fear of the unknown, from the moment of annunciation where Mary trusted and surrendered herself to God’s plan amid societal challenges.
Anxiety when she was worried about losing her 12-year-old son in the temple.
Confusion when she found Him in the temple in deep discussion with the religious teachers.
Pride when she heard Jesus’ response as a 12-year-old who knew exactly what his mission and purpose was: “Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
Understanding Jesus’ timing at the wedding of Cana which led to Jesus’ first miracle.
Acceptance as she silently stood at the cross to witness Jesus’ crucifixion and the fulfillment of Jesus’ calling.
Many of the parents fear the unknown, and are anxious about the security of their children for when their paths differ from parents, confused about their plans when they stray from parent’s expectations. Mary is showing us how she went from having those feelings of uncertainty to standing still at the cross near Jesus. She stood firm in her faith and trusted in God even in the face of trials. Let us learn to not be afraid of the unknown, relinquish control to let God’s plan flourish, trust in God especially in the time of trial and to stand firm in faith near the cross of Jesus.
