Faith that heals, Trusting Jesus in our weakness

Bible Reading: Isaiah 58: 6-7

Key Verse:  Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen ? to loose the chains of injustice..

DEVOTION

From a very young age we are taught the importance of prayer. We are taught to often pray on matters that we feel unable to tackle. But in Isaiah 58 verses 6-7, God calls for not only prayers and fasting but actions that supplement our prayers and fasting. The passage talks about how we need to complement our religious activities with charitable acts that are caring and compassionate. Mostly, we tend to think that our prayers are more than enough but God is saying we need to follow up with action as well.
While prayers help, it is our acts of compassion that completes our faith in Jesus. This concept truly stands out in the story of the friends who brought their paralyzed friend to Jesus. While these friends upheld their paralyzed friend in their prayers, they also broke through the roof and lowered their friend in front of Jesus to be healed. Such enormous faith and actions strengthened by faith is rarely seen in the bible.
It is hard to keep faith when we are going through rough times especially during times of sickness. When we watch helplessly as our loved ones are in discomfort and pain, it is extremely hard to trust in the Lord to see us through. However, it is during these moments that our faith needs to stand strong. When I was a young child, my parents would take me to various prayer meetings and conventions. I know a lot of my peers can attest to knowing how that feels. In the midst of crying, praying and singing, I would diligently study my nails, sometimes dozing off only to be woken by a nudge by mom followed by a look of sheer anger mixed with disappointment.
At the time, I didn’t understand what was going on but looking back, I now understand what I was surrounded by was the faith of numerous people who truly believed their prayers would be answered. We are so blessed in our upbringing which is anchored in faith in the Lord and built on the foundation of countless prayers and tears of our parents and ancestors.

   PRAYER

Dear Lord, during times of trials and tribulations, we ask you be our rock. Help us to look to you and know that you have a plan for us that is beyond what we can imagine for ourselves. We ask you to be our guiding light at all times. Amen.

Thought for the day

When darkness veils His lovely face, I'll rest on His unchanging grace, In every high and stormy day, my anchor holds within the veil.- Edward Mote (Song: On Christ the solid rock I stand).
