 ST .JOHN’S DAY

John 19:25-27
Devotion
As we celebrate St. John the apostle day, we have to see who this John
was as a disciple and his extra ordinary experiences and testimony as a
faithful disciple. Jesus met for the first time John along with his brother
James who were the sons of Zebedee and called by nick name by our Lord
as ‘sons of Thunder” at the sea of Galilee. John’s decision to follow Jesus
was immediate and Jesus made them Fisher’s of men from that moment
instead of fisher men toiling to catch fish to make a livelihood.
John was one of the disciples that Jesus included in His inner circle
along with Peter and James. John was a spiritual teacher and the author of
a Gospel and three epistles. John in turn loved Jesus, obeyed His
commandments followed Him to the end meaning to the last hours our Lord
spent in Calvary along with Mary and few others. John had a tough and
difficult path to follow thereafter. He was put in boiling oil at Ephesus to be
killed by the Romans which he survived by God’s grace. Finally, john was
expelled to Patmos Island. John had a natural death unlike the other
apostles. At Patmos he got the revelation of Jesus Christ that was given to
the churches in Asia minor and to the whole world.
John’s epistle and gospel are centered on the theme of Love. “Love one
another as I have loved you which is a commandment of our Lord, is given
much emphasize in his gospel and epistles. In today’s devotion we see
him at the foot of the cross. We see Jesus telling His mother “Woman here
is your son “and to the disciple John “Here is your mother “. We see Jesus
entrusting His mother with the care of his beloved disciple. History says
John took Mary home. john was not only a witness to Christ’s crucifixion
but also a faithful follower of Jesus whom we see leaning on to His master
at the last supper.
As john was faithful to his master, as John was compassionate and
loved every one who flocked around them, had a great testimony and
witnessing let us too offer our support, care and love to all around us and
as Mother Teresa said let others see the love of Christ in us.
Prayer
Lord our master and sustainer as we celebrate St. John the apostle day let
us be faithful to you to the end. Enable us to show compassion and love to
those who need it. Strengthen and empower us in Jesus’ name. Amen

Thought for the Day
How can we show kindness and empathy to others. How can we be a part
of their suffering and pain?
