FAMILY THAT HAS TO BE BUILT UPON CHRIST
1Peter 3:1-9

7. “ Husbands,” in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner..................will hinder prayers.

Marriage is one of the most important human relationships. No wonder Peter spends a few thoughts to help the readers with this sometimes difficult institution. In western cultures and even so with the present-day Kerala Christians, to expect wives to be submissive to their husbands is not considered politically correct. “ In the same way” what Peter meant is that, like believers would submit to a government authority, or as slaves to their master,  wives are required to submit themselves to their husbands. The Greek word used here is respect towards government authority, and it does not mean inferiority implied by that reference.
Wives who are believers do not have to submit to an unbeliever, because it is not possible to do so spiritually unless he is submitted to Christ.  Christian women are exhorted, not to dress and adorn themselves in any extravaganza, instead, their lives are marked by moral purity and reverence for God.   When a discerning husband catches a glimpse of your heart, hopefully, you may win him to Christ because he sees in you something worth having. Peter also reminded women should remember respected women like Sarah  who called Abraham her master out of her respect and reverence for God.
Women experience the saving grace of God on equal terms with men, so it is God's will that husbands maintain an unselfish, respectful appearance to wives. This will stop hindering men's prayers heard in God's presence.   Peter, in this passage also exhorts believers not only about the husband-wife relationships but also about the relationships with their brethren. They should be treated well even if they are your enemies because a Christian believer is called to inherit a blessing from God.

Prayer
Thank you, Lord Jesus for reminding us through your servant about the importance of the institution of  Marriage and the biblical teachings to safeguard it according to heavenly standards.  Help us to maintain a sound rapport in family relationships, and in our relationships with our brethren. In Jesus' name  Amen.

Thought of the day
Christian living stress  the need for unity, brotherly love, maintaining right relationships,
sympathy, and compassion towards our brethren.
