People of God: Ministry and Model

1 Peter 2:1-10

Peter is writing a letter to Christians in modern Turkey, who were being persecuted for their faith. Peter encourages them to stay strong during their time of suffering. Through these letters, Peter is showing us how to live so that others will want to know Jesus, reminding us that we are a billboard for Jesus.

Peter reminds us to do three things: to clean up, fill up and follow Jesus.

First, clean up: rid yourself of the bad- all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. Cleansing up our old thoughts, words, actions, and habits. The image of cleaning up is also mentioned in two other areas in the New Testament: James 1:21- Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you and Ephesians 4:22-24- you are taught, with regards to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. When you receive the word of God with a clean spirit and open mind it changes the way we act towards others.

Second, fill up: fill our cups with pure spiritual milk. When my 3-month-old is hungry in the middle of the night, he lets you know. For him milk is not optional, it’s a necessity. Do we have that same need or hunger for the word of God? When you develop a taste for God- you experience Him, and you see that he is good. Have you developed a taste for God? “Taste and see!” Give God a chance to speak to you.

Third, follow Jesus- you can’t follow Jesus and stay where you are. Following means movement, change and growth. Are you growing in your knowledge of God? Don’t settle- if you’re not growing then it’s time to clean up and fill up. We don’t come to Jesus just once, we keep coming to him, over and over every day.

Thought for the Day:
Thought for the Day: The goal of all nourishment is growth, as believers we must prepare and feed ourselves upon the word of God to grow.

Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for your word that gives us the spiritual nourishment we need. Help us to grow in grace, mature in faith and knowledge of you. Amen
