Holy Qurbana: The Sacrament of Thanksgiving

1 Peter 2: 1-12

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Self-improvement is an important part of our lives. Getting in shape, taking more chances, evaluating relationships, and planning for change, are common items we choose. So we set out by waging wars on situations, people, circumstances, and of course, against sweets and cookies. While all of these improvements are necessary, the scripture is urging us to wage war on our souls. It’s important to note that this is not the same as battling our souls. There may be times where we fail and fall short of what God wants, but we cannot lose the war for our souls.

We must do a self-inventory and remove jealousy, envy, deceitfulness, and other sinful desires. These are the battles of the war on our souls. As we remove each of these from our lives, we can replace each with things that glorify God. Only when we make a conscious decision to remove sinful desires with praise and glorification can we fulfill our purpose.

The necessity of fighting for our soul draws from being chosen. The passage reminds us that we belong to God and that we are His special possession. This is a reminder that we do not belong to this world, but that we were bought back through the price paid on the cross, and that we hold great value in His eyes. By eliminating sinful desires and thoughts, it frees our mind and souls to focus more on Him.

This passage is also a reminder for us as Christians that we are challenged to be different. To let our actions speak for us and to live so good that the “haters” have no choice but to join in praise (v12). To ensure that our thoughts and actions are based on bringing glory to God. We will face challenges in life and many uncertainties, but we can be confident in the guarantee that those who put their trust in Him, can never be put to shame.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Help us to remove the things in our lives that distract or turn away our focus from You. Renew our spirits that we may live good lives that are pleasing to You and bring You praise and glory always. Amen.

Gracious John PA-C
