Fall: Violation of the purpose of Creation
Romans 5:12-21
Vs 20-21“The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
In Romans 5, we read the contrast of characters between Adam and Christ, love of God against the sin of man, the man of sin Adam to the God of love Jesus and how Adam brings death while Jesus brings eternal life.
There are 5 main contrast characters of Adam and Christ in these verses.
  1. Adam brought sin into the world and Christ gives people victory over sin. (Vs 12)
  2. Many die because of Adam’s sin and many live because of God’s grace through Christ.(Vs 17)
  3. Adam’s sin results in condemnation and Christ’ death results in justification. (Vs 16)
  4. Adam’s disobedience brings sin to many and Christ’s obedience brings righteousness to many.( Vs 19)
  5. Adam’s sin reigns in death and God’s Grace through Jesus reigns to bring eternal life.(Vs 21)
Vs.12-21 focuses on the consequences of Adam’s decision to disobey God’s one and only command found in Genesis 2: 16-17. Paul tells us how sin entered the world. Through Adam we have received a sin nature and death came to all of us. Adam sinned and death reigned. Grace reigns through Jesus Christ when we accept him by faith. Hence we receive Grace, righteousness and eternal life only through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We must make a choice to follow Adam or Jesus. Adam chose to disobey God. Jesus obeyed God, coming on earth. Following Adam leads to death and eternity in hell whereas following Jesus means everlasting life with Jesus in Heaven.
God wants all of us to be saved and none of us to perish. God is rich in mercy. For God so loved the world that he gave us his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3: 16). For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2: 8).
PRAYER
Heavenly Gracious Father, we thank you for your grace, righteousness and eternal life you gave through Jesus Christ. Help us to live our lives according to your will. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
