Marriage: Blessings that Overflow.

Alex Thomas & Dr Susan Alex

Atlanta Mar Thoma Church

1.Happy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways.
  P
salm 128 is a family hymn, a song for marriage and is used usually whenever a happy household meets to praise the Lord. A life of blessing starts with the fear of the Lord. Psalm 128 gives a blueprint for a happy home. God’s blueprint for a happy home begins with a God-fearing man, supplemented by a fruitful, faithful woman, and eventually fruitful children. Personal and National well being are the result of homes where God is feared. A man who fears God will be content, his joy is in the Lord, he will walk in His ways, he will use his time wisely and he will lead his family by example. The problems we encounter in our Nation can be traced back to the problems in our homes, as the family is the building block of the Nation. The proper fear of the Lord stems from knowing His holiness and power and it results in obedience to Him. Evidence of the blessedness is getting the opportunity to eat and enjoy the fruits of your labor, vs.2.

Secondly, a Godly woman will be fruitful and faithful in the home, like a fruitful vine in a house, vs. 3. Fruit of the vine in the Bible refers to joy and gladness (Judges 9:13, Psalms 104:15). A Godly mother makes a home a happy place to be.

Thirdly, Fruitful children will carry on the Godly legacy of the home. In vs. 3, the children are described as “olive plants” around the table. As they are growing, they need the care, patience and the nourishing soil of a God-fearing home.

Persistent prayer, studying the word of God and walking with the Lord daily is needed for the blessing. Those who fear the Lord and live in obedience to Him will be prosperous and successful (vs. 2), they will have a happy family life (Vs.3), and they will live to see their children’s children (vs.6) and they will see the growth of their church/community also (vs. 5-6).

Oswald Chambers said, “When you fear God, you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God, you fear everything else”. John MacArthur said that this psalm recounts four blessings: “provisions, prosperity, partner, and progeny or grandchildren”.
PRAYER

“Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace”, Numbers 6:24-26.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”, Joshua 24:15.
