Renewed Relationship in Love

Katherine Philip
St. John’s MTC, NY

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.”

As humans, we all have our definitions of love, whether it may be through biology, chemistry, or mutual interests. We are quick to say that love is when one person is attracted to another or that love is when we would do anything for others to keep them happy, but is that what love really is?

We have heard this passage of 1 Corinthians 13 over and over again but have we really taken the time to understand what it truly means? As written, we can see the qualities of how love should reflect in our relationships. “Love is patient, love is kind” is one of the most universal sayings that we may come across but it is time to change our perspectives. In this chapter, the word, love, is seen eight times and of course, it is described even more. Growing up, we have learned, time after time, that God is love. Let us read through these verses once again but now, replace each “love” with “God”….Amazing, isn’t it? It is as though Paul wrote a hidden message in this chapter for us all. We can clearly see the qualities of God. From verse 4-8, we can see that “God is patient, God is kind. He does not envy, He does not boast, He is not proud. He does not dishonor others, He is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs. God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. God never fails.”

As Christians, our actions have to mirror our beliefs. We are called to be more like God. It is important to remember that we are to be patient and kind. We are to be selfless and expect nothing in return. Our duty is to keep God first and live out His will during our temporary time on earth. In times of trials and joy, we have to love unconditionally. We may have our own definitions of what love means, but to us Christians in this cold world, God is love.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you so much for showing us the true meaning of love, for always being patient when we are not, for loving us unconditionally through all obstacles. Help us to be more like you through every situation that we may face and help us to remember that you are the true meaning of love. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Through Him, we are everything. Without Him, we are nothing
