Walking in the Light of Shared Fellowship

Bible Reading:  1 John 1:1-10

Key Verse:  6-7

V6-7 “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

DEVOTION

In the opening of his letter, the apostle St. John echoes the "In the beginning" found in Genesis and his own Gospel. John points us to a fellowship (koinonia) that existed within the Trinity before time began—a shared life of love between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the very life we are invited into.
However, John is clear:”God is Light”, and fellowship with Him requires walking in that light. We often hesitate, fearing the light will expose our darkness. So we hide. We treat our sin as a secret to guard, but hiding is exhausting; it drains our spiritual strength like a summer drought. Yet, as the Cross proves, God does not expose us to condemn us, but to heal us. We cannot have fellowship with the light while we refuse to let that light penetrate our sin.
True fellowship begins when we stop the "work" of hiding and embrace the relief of being fully known. When we confess—agreeing with God about our condition—what once felt like His heavy hand of conviction becomes the very refuge that carries us home. As Hebrews 9:22 reminds us, without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness; thus, John assures us that the blood of Jesus is not distant, but actively cleansing us. This transparency doesn't just fix our relationship with God; it restores our bond with one another. In the light, our masks fall, our guilt is covered by grace, and we finally experience the fullness of joy that comes from a life shared with the Eternal God.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, thank You for lighting our path. We thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son, Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins. Grant us the courage to walk in Your light, trusting that while weeping may last through the night, Your forgiving peace brings joy each morning. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Confession is not an admission of defeat, but an invitation to fellowship with the Father.
