Dignity of Work and the Danger of Wealth

Bible Reading:   James 5:1-6

Key Verse:  4

V 4 “Look, the wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty”.

DEVOTION

The letter of James presents a clear attitude toward money and resources. It emphasizes that how believers use and view their possessions is an essential part of faithful Christian discipleship.  In the days of James, there was a group of poor day laborers whose wages were very small. If the wages were withheld, even for a day, he and his family likely could not eat (Deut 24:14-15). In light of this situation, he warns the wealthy that withholding wages or acting unjustly will bring serious accountability before God.
Dignity of Work
Significantly, the very first pages of the Bible insist that work is a divine assignment. God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden “to work it and take care of it” (Gen 2:15). The proverb “Work is Worship” was first said by Mahatma Gandhi. That’s why Colossians 3:23 reminds us that the true measure of work is not recognition from people, but devotion to God. John the Baptist said to the crowds that came to be baptized by him, " Practice integrity in your work” (Luke 3:10-14).
Workers, through their hard labor, make the development of society possible and contribute to its sustenance, stability, and fruitfulness. A person who works with integrity becomes a testimony of God’s order in a disordered world. God never intended work to enslave us, but to bless us and bless others through us.
The Danger of Wealth
James reminds us that wealth, when misused, can become a dangerous trap leading to eternal loss. The Bible does not teach that money itself is evil; rather, it warns that money can become dangerous when it is in the hands of those inclined towards sin. Jesus calls it “unrighteous Mammon” (Luke 16:9-11). It is not sinful to possess wealth, but it is sinful to hoard it. Therefore, we must be careful to use our resources in a way that honors God.
Someone once compared money to fire. When it is used wisely and kept under control, it serves as a helpful tool. But when it is handled carelessly or driven by evil intent, it can become a powerful force that destroys both property and life.
As Christians, we should view wealth as a good tool to be used carefully and faithfully as stewards of the Lord. Our responsibility is to remain faithful to God in how we manage and steward our finances.

PRAYER

Lord, teach us to honor You in our work and to remain faithful in whatever You entrusted us with. Guard our hearts from greed and help us to find joy in diligence and contentment in you alone. May everything we do bring glory to your name. Amen!
