God’s Mercy Embraces All

Bible Reading: Psalms  86

 Verse  for today

“Where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” — Romans 5:20

DEVOTION

Psalm 86 is a sincere cry for help from David. It is the heartfelt prayer of a child of God who believes that God will deliver him and it shows us that God’s mercy embraces all who come to Him with humble hearts. David says, “You are my God” and “I put my trust in You, Lord,” showing that his confidence is not in himself but in the mercy of God. He confesses, “I am poor and needy,” not in a worldly sense, for David was a king, but in the poverty of self, a realization learned through seasons of brokenness and struggle; that without God he is nothing. This is what Jesus meant when He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” David was a great sinner, yet he knew how to be broken before God, for in Psalm 51:17 he reminds us that the sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit and a contrite heart. That is why he prays, “Teach me Your way, Lord; give me an undivided heart,” the cry of someone who longs to walk closely with God. David also remembers who God is -merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and full of love and this gives him hope. Psalm 86 reminds us that no matter who we are, when we come before God humble and poor in spirit, His mercy is wide enough to receive us all. God’s mercy truly embraces everyone who trusts in Him.

PRAYER

Merciful God, you are our God, and we trust in You. Give us humble and undivided hearts and lead us in Your ways. Thank You for Your mercy that embraces us always.
