Come and Dine – The Invitation of the Risen Lord

Bible Reading:  John 21:1–14

Key Verse:  17

Simon son of John ,"Do you love me "

DEVOTION

The passage in John 21:1–14 presents the account of the risen Jesus appearing to His disciples by the Sea of Galilee and guiding them to a miraculous catch of fish. While this is a literal miracle, it also serves as a deeper spiritual parable about how Christ continues to reveal Himself and guide His followers.
The disciples had labored all night without success. In their weariness and discouragement, Jesus appeared—though they did not immediately recognize Him—and instructed them to cast their nets on the other side. Their obedience resulted in an abundant catch. This moment reflects a recurring truth in the Christian life: often, in seasons of darkness, confusion, or failure, Christ comes near and directs us toward fruitfulness. His voice may not always be immediately recognized, but His guidance is always purposeful.
The passage shows Jesus as the great provider. He provides hope by appearing to the disciples a third time since his resurrection; he provides the miraculous catch, enabling the disciples to sustain their livelihood; and He provides a meal to the tired and weary disciples after a hard night’s work.
From this passage, two key reflections emerge.
First, those who truly love Christ can recognize Him, even in uncertainty. It was not Peter, the impulsive man of action, who first identified Jesus, but John, the disciple known for his deep love and devotion. Through the haze of distance and uncertainty, it was love that enabled John to perceive the Lord. This suggests that love sharpens spiritual perception. When we cultivate a genuine love for Christ, we become more attuned to His presence in our lives—even in disappointment, suffering, or unanswered questions. Love clears the vision that is often clouded by worldly concerns and personal struggles, helping us trust that Christ is at work and will guide us in His time.
Second, those who encounter Christ cannot keep that experience to themselves. Upon recognizing Jesus, John immediately told Peter, “It is the Lord!” This simple declaration sparked action in Peter, who quickly responded. This highlights how faith is often strengthened in community. The quiet conviction of one believer can ignite renewed faith and action in another. Testimony, even when spoken simply, has the power to encourage and awaken others.
The passage also reveals the tender love of Jesus. After the miracle, He invites the disciples to share a meal, saying, “Come and dine.” This invitation reflects His care, fellowship, and restoration. The disciples, though aware of their previous failures, especially Peter, are received with grace and love. In Christ’s presence, they find both provision and reassurance.
Ultimately, this scene points beyond itself to a greater hope. Just as the disciples came ashore after a long and laborious night to find Jesus waiting with provision, so too can believers look forward to the day when their earthly journey ends. There is a promise that Christ will welcome His people into eternal fellowship with Him.
Therefore, the invitation “Come and dine” is not only for the disciples in that moment, but for all believers. It is an invitation to trust, to recognize, to share, and to rest in the love of the risen Lord.

PRAYER

Gracious and loving Lord

We thank you for revealing yourself to us as the risen Savior who meets us in our moments of weakness, doubt, and weariness. Thank you for your gentle voice that calls us, guides us, and leads us into abundance when we trust and obey You .Thank you for your invitation to “come and dine,” for your provision, your fellowship, and your unfailing grace. As we journey through life, keep our hearts fixed on the hope of one day being with you in eternal joy. Strengthen our faith, renew our spirits, and guide us in your truth. We offer this prayer in the name of our risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
