Women and Mission

Bible Reading:    Luke 8:1-3
Key verse “After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.” Luke 8:1-3

DEVOTION

When we think of missionaries, we often recall the twelve disciples or Paul and other men. But behind the scenes of Jesus’ ministry were quite a few hardworking women who risked and surrendered everything they had to follow Him. If we pay close attention to the women mentioned in these verses, we see that these women are not all of the same background. Mary Magdalene was a demon possessed by women, shunned away by the world. Whereas Joanna was a woman in the court who held high public status and wealth. One thing these women shared in common was the presence of Jesus touching their souls. His healing ministry was so impactful that these women had to follow Him. In a day and age where women were looked down upon, Jesus uplifted them for what they were able to sacrifice. We must keep in mind that these women traveled along with Jesus and his disciples which not only put their reputation at stake but it meant that they had to also earn an income in order to provide for Jesus' needs. They weren't just passive listeners, rather they responded to the opportunity to support the ministry. Their lives serve as an example to many young women who tend to think they aren't capable of being part of the ministry.

PRAYER

Gracious and loving father, I thank you for the gift of womanhood that you have blessed us with. Thank you including women in your ministry who exemplify what it means to be to serve the Lord according to their own abilities. Help us to use our best talents for Your glory all the days of our lives. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Women in the bible have always redefined what it takes to be a missionary to serve God’s plan. Now one question remains; how will you redefine what it takes to be a missionary for Christ? You do not need to be perfect, but can you fully surrender your success and failures to the Lord and let him use your talents for His Glory?
