 The Passover Meal of Deliverence

Bible Reading:   Exodus 12:21-28
Key verse“Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants.” (Exodus 12:24)

DEVOTION

The last plague in Egypt resulted in Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. God sent death to the firstborn of Egypt, but the Israelites were saved because they obeyed God’s instructions. Moses told the elders to take a lamb, kill it, and put its blood on the doorposts. This act showed their faith and obedience. That night, God protected the houses marked by blood. Later, this act became a yearly ritual called Passover.
Historians explain that Passover started in a farming and shepherd culture. The lamb and the unleavened bread were part of ancient spring festivals. When God delivered Israel, these foods were given new meaning as they became signs of redemption and covenant. The lamb’s blood was a sign of protection. “Pass over” does not mean God ignored the houses but that God guarded them (Exodus 12:23). The lamb’s death was not magical but relational as it marked a family that trusted in Yahweh’s word The unleavened bread reminded them; they left Egypt in a hurry as there was no time to let the dough rise (Exodus 12:39). So, Passover was not just a meal; it was a symbol of salvation and God’s power to set people free.
Bible describes Passover as a key symbol of Jewish identity. Every year families celebrated together and taught their children: “What does this mean?” (Exodus 12:26). This was not a private act but a public memory of God’s deliverance. Even today, Jewish families celebrate the Seder meal with special foods such as bitter herbs for suffering, unleavened bread for hurry, and wine for joy. It is a living story of God’s deliverance.
For us, Passover points to Jesus, our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). Just as the lamb’s blood saved Israel from death, Jesus’ blood saves us from sin and death. At His Last Supper, Jesus gave new meaning to the meal. He offered bread and wine as signs of the new covenant in His blood (Matthew 26:26–28). Today we remember this through the Lord’s Supper and proclaim that Christ is our Deliverer.
The first Passover required trust in God before the plague came. In the same way, faith means obedience even when we don’t see the reason. We need to identify our “doorposts” such as choices, relationships, habits etc. in our life where God calls us to mark His lordship. The Passover reminds that; deliverance begins with trust expressed in action.

PRAYER
Lord, thank You for the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. Help me to live as one marked by Your saving grace, remembering Your deliverance every day. Amen.
