Jesus Christ who Restores to the Rightful Place

Bible Reading:   John 21:1-14

Key Verse: “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” (John 21:10)

DEVOTION

John 21:1–14 recounts a post-resurrection appearance of Jesus by the Sea of Tiberias. The disciples, having returned to fishing and became unsuccessful.  Such a night of fruitless labor would have made them tired, confused, and perhaps wondering about their future without Jesus. They had once been called to be "fishers of men," yet here they were, back to ordinary fishing, as if their calling had been forgotten. But Jesus had not forgotten them as the narrative continues with experience of a miraculous catch of fish and share breakfast with the risen Christ. Though they don't immediately recognize Him, His words carry familiar authority: “Cast the net on the right side of the boat.” When they obey, the nets are miraculously filled. This was no coincidence; it was a divine reminder of their calling and identity.
Jesus meets them where they are. He prepares breakfast for them, symbolizing His provision, care, and fellowship. It is an act of restoration and assurance. The One who was crucified is now alive and restoring His followers back to their rightful purpose. The one whom they saw as dead, is assuring that the promise of resurrection is fulfilled. This breakfast moment begins the healing. Healing from guilt and shame. Verse 12 records that ‘none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord,’ describing a deep emotional disorientation illustrating a blend of awe, guilt, confusion, and reverence. Instead of rushing forward, they sit in silent recognition, perhaps unsure if they are worthy of this moment. The presence of Jesus, His words, and His hospitality all say one thing: You still belong. You still have a place in My plan.
No matter how far we drift, or how much we feel like failures, Jesus meets us with grace. Jesus offers not confrontation, but companionship by offering a meal instead of blaming or complaining. It brings the disciples back into wholeness. He doesn’t just forgive; He restores. He reminds us who we are and reaffirms our place in His mission.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting me in my weakness and restoring me with Your grace. Help me to respond to Your voice, trust Your calling, and walk in the place You’ve prepared for me. Amen.

Thought for the day

Jesus meets us in failure, not with blame, but with grace, restoring us to purpose.
