Old age that combines faith and experience.

1stTimothy. 5: 1-10.

Verses 1 and 2.) Never speak harshly to an older man,[a] but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. 2 Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.

On September 17th Sunday, our church celebrates as the senior citizens’ Sunday to honor the faith, contribution and wisdom of our seniors. In Bible, several portions mentioned and valued the faith, wisdom and experience of the elderly people. Verse.17.  Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well,[e] especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. Leviticus 19:32. You are to rise in the presence of the elderly, honor the aged, and fear your God. I am the LORD.
Affection and respect:  In this passage, Paul explained the importance of relationship with others among the Christians; which determined by their age, their need, or by their responsible positions. In these particular verses Paul deals with the need of respect of the older people. They should be treated with affection and respect. The older men should be treated and respected as one’s own father and older women as one’s own mother. They should be respected and honored by their maturity and long years of experience. The new generation can learn from their experience of life and practical aspects of problem facing and solving ways in life. The young people should pay attention to their advice and honor their wisdom.
Brotherliness to the younger people: Here Paul expresses a very important message to the older people, that, they should make sure that their conduct and disposition are worthy to command the respect of their younger generation. The younger people need to treat as their own brothers and sisters, which are as their equal with affection. Sometimes an older person may need to be corrected for a behavior or attitude, but it should be alone with gentleness and love, and not with harsh spirit.
Relationship with purity: Our relationship must always be marked with purity. Paul said that to treat the younger women as sisters with absolute purity and respect. It is our responsibility to protect and promote the physical and spiritual well beings of our older and younger people of our community and church. The Christian should look upon the human race as one big family and treat each person as a member of the same family.

Prayer
O Lord, we thank you for our senior adults of our community for their vision and wisdom. Thank you for blessing each day of their lives. God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we can’t change, the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen.
