Life: To Be Reformed Through the Word of God

Scripture :Joshua 3:1-17

This passage describes a monumental moment in the history of Judaism. After spending years in exile, a young Israelite nation now stands on the banks of the Jordan River looking into the promised land. They may have been overwhelmed to see that after forty years of wandering in the desert, they were at the doorstep of the land promised to them generations ago. They may have been distracted by all the wealth, power and freedom that awaited them
Under Joshua’s leadership, however, they put aside all their own emotions and priorities and instead focused on one thing: the ark of the covenant. In such overwhelming circumstances they made it a priority to honor God and literally set his word before them. Careful attention was paid to every detail regarding the ark and how it was handled. Yet not a single verse in this passage considered the details of their own personal lives and possessions.
Many of us have been on the banks of the Jordan, looking out at new opportunities that are within reach. For our older generations this may be when they leave their homeland to come to a new country in search of a brighter future. For our younger generations this may be when we accomplish milestones in our education and careers. In these moments we could obsess about ourselves by leaning on our own understanding and working for our own glorification. But what if we let God go ahead of us? What if we let his Word be a guide for us and lived our lives in honor of God and his holy word?
We wouldn’t be where we are today without God’s guiding hand carrying us through every trial we face. Let’s not take a step to cross the Jordan unless it is hand in hand with God and in obedience of his word

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the ways you’ve guided us from exile and through the desert. Forgive us for the ways in which we make idols of ourselves and our own desires. Help us use your word as a guide that goes before us and help us to honor you in the promised land you will deliver us to. Amen.
