 Christian Approach to Differently Abled

  Mark 3:1-6

It is the sabbath and Jesus is again in the synagogue, presumably at Capernaum. This account needs to be read in the light of the healing of the man paralytic. These two occasions demonstrate the authority of Jesus over sin and sickness.
When Jesus entered the synagogue, he noticed a man with a withered hand there. The Pharisees watched Jesus closely, aware that Jesus has already been healed on the Sabbath. They are motivated to accuse Jesus. Mark, very cleverly notices an irony here, the authorities deny Jesus to do good on the sabbath while they conspire to do evil on the Sabbath. For Jesus, Sabbath is not a resting day but a day for celebration, celebrating the wholeness of creation. So, healing on the sabbath is not a violation of the law but participation in the creative act of God.
Jesus orders the man to stand up in front of everybody. Jesus made the man stand at the center of the synagogue and asked them “which is lawful on the sabbath, to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?”
The question of doing good or evil absolutely refers to the healing of this man. Where good needs to be done, there can be no neutrality, and failure to do is to contribute to evil.
In the face of the need of this man, the religious authorities are silent. The silence is evidence that, for human needs. This kind of religion neither reach God nor human rather make God angry over their hierocracy
These silent observers are willing to tolerate the lamentable condition of their fellow worshippers.
But for Jesus, the Gospel of god is about the disposition of the heart, which cannot remain unmoved in the face of suffering .the test of all theologies and moralities is either passed or failed by one's response to the weakest and defenseless person of the society.
The compassion of Jesus is free but costly. The hand is restored but the Pharisees and Herodians began to plot..how they might kill Jesus. We are called not to show mere sympathy towards those in need but to extend caring hands which is always costly.

Prayer
Lord, help us to open our eyes and break our silence so that we may be able to extend our hands to withered hands.
