 Overcoming the Addictions of Life

Ephesians 5:8-21

V.8 – For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light

The main focus of this passage is in verse 9, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” The word light can be used as a metaphor to describe the power and love of Christ. Light is something that is very crucial in our lives and has many applications in all aspects of life. Similarly, God is very crucial in our lives and will change our lives if we let him work on all areas of our lives. The gospel of St. John 8:12 says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

  1. Light Changes things around it (v. 9-10)
When we have the Lord as the Light in our lives, it will change the way we live and the way we view life. We will produce fruits of the spirit and please the Lord in all that we do.
  1. Light Exposes Wrongs (v.11)
When the Lord is the light in our lives, it will expose and reveal all the wrong things in our lives. Through the Lord’s help, we are able to overcome and remove these wrong things from our lives and live a life for the Lord.
  1. Light Illuminates in Darkness (v.13)

When the Lord is the light in our lives, no darkness can touch us. Everything that is illuminated by the light becomes a light itself and therefore has no darkness within it. Similarly, when we allow the Lord to be our light, we become lights in this world of darkness, where no darkness can touch us.

Prayer
Dear Lord, allow us to make you the light in our lives. Let us look to you to guide and strengthen us to all we face in life. We know that your grace is sufficient for us to overcome any addictions we might be going through, and we pray that we can be lights in this world of darkness. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Thought for the Day

Let us allow God to be the light in our lives, and allow Him to change us and shape us to be lights in this world of darkness.
