 Gray hair: Crown of glory

Proverbs16:20-33
Verse: Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life

The book of Proverbs, especially this scripture portion demonstrates two different ways to live.  It contrasts with the way of wisdom, with the way of folly. The foolish make bad decisions and suffer bad consequences in life, while the wise make good decisions and enjoy good consequences and live ripe to old age.

Old age is a crown of dignity when it is found in the ways of justice.
Long life is a reward of righteousness, and grey hair is a crown of glory because it is gained in a life lived, pleasing to the Lord.  A righteous life represents wisdom and age and is viewed as a blessing of the Lord to anyone who lives by God's will.  It is considered as a reward for being right during a life lived in wisdom from above.

In Proverbs 17: 6 we continue to read that, to live happily to old age and be able to see one's grandchildren is also considered as a blessing from God for someone who lived according to His will. Bible also teaches that the fear of the Lord will give you a merry heart, joy, and gladness throughout your lifetime. The author of the proverbs assumes that a life lived in unrighteousness will not lead to a peaceful life or receive God's blessings.

The glory of the young men is their strength, but the splendor of the old is their wisdom. God has given a role for both.  Now again,  the Book of Proverbs are general rules of life, not universal truths.   Not everyone who has grey hair is wise, as there are some foolish old men. The point is clear – while everyone ages and while most will eventually see their hair go gray, only those who are wise – those who have lived a righteous life  - are able to consider their gray hair “ a Crown of Glory.

Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, Thank you for enabling us to live a life worthy of your blessing, filled with  Justice, love, and righteousness.  Forgive all our rebellion and unwillingness to disobey your will and lose all the heavenly blessings. Help us to live a blessed old age, may our gray hair be a sign of splendor and glory. Amen.

Thought for the Day
Crown of glory to a person of old age is not a symbol , but is a recognition of achievement. It is not a  coronation, but a victory celebration.
