 Humble yet Confident

Proverb 30: 1-5
v5 “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”

Agur is a man that you won’t see before or after Proverbs 30 and he is probably not the most famous names that you see in the Bible, yet, he is declaring a strong message of how great our God is and his confidence in Him.  In these verses, we can see that he is not only showing how great our God is but also showing how less he is without God. As we read these verses we can see that Agur is weary and he knows that he can’t win this battle by himself.  He is stating that he is a brute, not having any human understanding, lacking wisdom and knowledge and that he is weary. We all can somewhat relate to what Agur is going through here. We all have those battles where we feel so weary, not having the knowledge or wisdom for how to get over those battles. When I read these verses, what I see is humility, a humble heart, but most importantly, his confidence in his God. That’s why he said “I am weary, God, but I can prevail.” He knows who his God is and what He can do. He knows that his LORD is a God who has gathered up the wind in his hand, wrapped up the waters in a cloak and established all the ends of the earth. He knows that every word of God is flawless and He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Here we can see Agur’s immense confidence in his shield. He is confident that he is safe behind that shield. By saying “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him”, Agur is quoting a song that David wrote after the LORD delivered him from the hands of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul which you could see in 2 Samuel 22. Neither David nor Agur is saying that we won’t have any obstacles in our lives but, they are saying when you have LORD as your shield, you are safe behind him.

As this year 2020 is coming to an end and we all are eagerly waiting to welcome 2021, I am sure we all had to face many obstacles, especially this year. We all tend to go behind many shields in our lives when those obstacles come and strike us. For some it’s alcohol, for some it’s food, for some it’s shopping, for some it’s loneliness, etc. As we prepare to welcome a new year, a question that we might want to ask ourselves is: Who or what is that shield that we go behind when we face those obstacles in life? When you have the WORD of GOD which is flawless and readily available to you, why not take that? As it says in Ephesians: “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” When you build that confidence in Every Word of God, you can also say just like David and Agur said: My God is a shield, I can take refuge in Him and I can prevail.

PRAYER
Abba, Father, we pray that you give us the knowledge and wisdom to see and know that every Word of God is flawless, that you are our shield and we can take refuge in you. Amen!
