Sabbath: leading to perfection of creation
Colossians 1:15-25
Vs 15, 20 - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation...And through him to reconcile to himself all things whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross
In today’s passage we can see Paul’s assertion of the supremacy of Christ in two parts – Christ’s supremacy in creation (vv. 15-17) and Christ’s supremacy in redemption (vv. 18-20)
Christ’s supremacy in creation:
Here Paul exalts Christ as the very the image of God, as the creator and the pre-existent sustainer of all things. Also we read Christ as image of God in 2Corinthians 4:4. God is invisible, no one has seen God. Christ, who is the eternal Son of God and who became the God-man, reflects and reveals God to us. (John 1: 18; 14:9). The Son is the only person of the Trinity that is manifest to man. In our worship services we use the Nicene Creed to say “We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father”. By him all things were created (John. 1:3), He is before all things (John 1: 1-2). He is the beginning of the new creation and Supreme over all creation.  Here Paul is saying Jesus is completely and perfectly God, Creator and Sustainer of all things in heaven and earth and fully human.
Christ’s supremacy in redemption:
Christ is the head of the church, the first to be resurrected, the fullness of deity in bodily form and the reconciler. God is reconciling us to himself through Christ. This reconciliation is plainly through Christ and not of ourselves. Christ shed his precious blood on the cross to save us from our sins to bring peace with God. Christ carried the consequences of our sin on the cross and all of human nature is redeemed by Christ’s death and resurrection, so that we and all creation can be reconciled to God.
God the Father reveals himself in and through the Scripture by the power of the Holy Spirit and through the life of God the Son. Christ created us to have fellowship with the living God. But since sin came into this world, Christ paid with His precious blood to redeem us from our sins and be reconciled with the living God. As we acknowledge Jesus as the Lord over our lives, let us live a life worthy of Christ’s act of redemption and reconciliation.
PRAYER
Heavenly Gracious Father, we praise and thank You for revealing Your supremacy and reconciling us through Jesus Christ. Help us to keep You Lord over everything we do. In Jesus name we pray.  Amen.
