Human who Grows Thorns
Genesis 3:12-19
God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that is was good (Gen 3:17,18).
The short cuts which destroy the normalcy of nature would sabotage the serene and pleasant experiences of life. The use of excessive freedom which overlooks the natural expressions as imagined by the creator grows thorns and thistles. By eating the forbidden fruit human succumbed to the temptation to become life God.
Calamities are caused by the urge to cross the boundaries set by God. In the midst of unlimited growth and spread of science and technology in the book of Genesis, human life struggles for survival. Under the pretext of helping to make human life easy and enjoyable humaneness and life itself is being destroyed. Due to such development, drinking water becomes scarce global warming escalates, pure air becomes less, weather changes happen, sea level rises, pollution increases, resources diminish due to unrestrained consumption.
Thorns and thistles are made to grow by the effort to capitalize the tree in the middle of the Garden. Development experts also asks the same question. Why should we keep all these forests, hills and rocky hills which disfigure the earth? Is it not better to make the earth into a level ground? Is it not more desirable to avoid diversity and create uniformity? Fashion, fashion technology and fashion designing become topics of research. While one group become ill due to malnutrition, another group become ill through over eating. A recovery from this sad state of affairs should become the spiritual mission henceforth.
The fruit of maldevelopment which is good for food, a delight for the eyes and which makes one wise ultimately grows thorns and thistles. We live in very critical times.
PRAYER
Lord, give us wisdom to move along the path akin to nature which is normal, avoiding destructive ways of development, Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Humans as the crown of creation must take care of the creation.
