Compassionate Healing
Luke 9:1-9
Vs.6: "So they set out and went from village to village,
preaching the gospel and healing people
everywhere,"
1: When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them
power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases.
2:and he sent them out to
preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
Healing is one of the important ways God
demonstrates his love and compassion. Jesus said, “As the Father has sent
me, I am sending you” (John 20:21). Here, Jesus sends his disciples to do the
same things that Jesus did: to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the
sick. A man with leprosy came to Jesus and begged him on his knees.
“If you are willing you can make me clean” (Mark 1:40). Filled with compassion,
Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man and he was cured (Mark 1:41).
Bartimaeus, a blind man shouted “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me”. “What
do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I
want to see. “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Immediately, he
received his sight (Mark 10: 51-52). When Jesus sent his chosen twelve on their
mission, they were to do exactly as their master did. They were given power
over evil forces and to heal the sick. Through their actions, they also
proclaimed the good news of the kingdom.
During Biblical time, miraculous healing was
needed to strengthen the faith of people. In the modern world, even
though we have new medications and surgical procedures available to treat
deadly diseases, it is still important to integrate our faith and prayer into
our healing process. Just as Jesus sent his disciples to heal the sick, we are
also sent to help others in the difficult times. We can show compassion
through our prayers and actions. Let you and I become everyday pilgrims
whom God can use to bring healing to our broken world.
PRAYER
Father, forgive us for
being selfish. Help us to show love and compassion to our suffering neighbor.
Amen
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Through our actions
God’s love and compassion is materialized.
