Called to Unity

How very good and pleasant it is when
kindred live together in unity!
Today’s passage encourages us to be a body of believers that take care of each other. It reminds us that it is only when we experience true unity amongst ourselves that God's blessing will be in abundance. When we are unified, the primary blessing we need has been met, which is being a part of the Kingdom and the fellowship of the Triune God with His people. With this blessing met, all other blessings can flow into our lives. While we are in true unity, this state of blessing is constant even though the various conditions and situations in our lives will change. Thus, even in times that appear to be difficult, He will provide for His people.
Our type of unity should reflect the unity within the triune God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit do not clamor for attention or have arguments between them such as who is the holiest, and most powerful. Instead, they exalt each other, commune with each other, and defer to one another. Each divine person harbors the others at the center of His being. They glorify one another, not because they are getting something out of it but, because of their love and appreciation for each one’s true self.
However, so much of our world and the powers that guide it are not considering living in the unity modeled by the Trinity. As a result, we see events like terrorism, brutality and killings in America and the world.
In the midst of these realities the Psalmist is exhorting us to live a life of unity rather than a life driven by our selfish inclinations of simply looking out for ourselves! In Matthew 6:33, Jesus is exhorting us to live in this same lifestyle; when we seek first His Kingdom and its righteousness, all these things (the provisions and blessings) will be ours. Let us help one another and love each other unconditionally in pursuit of the unity that makes the good life thrive around the world.
