Education – A Ministry of the Church
Titus 2:1-5

Mathew Lukose
Epiphany MTC, New York

1.But as for you, teach what is consistent with sound doctrine.

Apostle Paul is instructing Titus to teach doctrines that will mold healthy church and healthy families. A healthy church consists of both young and old members. In this passage we see that it deals with older women encouraging younger women to live the proper Christian life.  In Jesus Christ, not only are the barriers between race and sex removed, but also barriers between age groups are expunged.
Today the world is so engrossed in false doctrine that is having negative results on the moral conduct of the people, especially in the realm of the home.  Today’s passage highlights the important responsibility God has given us to spread His word in view of the many false teachings. Sound Christian doctrine not only brings us in to an intimate relationship with our Savior Jesus Christ; but also equips us, as stewards of His grace, to represent Him as His ambassadors in this world. Certainly Christian values are not of this world, but, it is in this world that God has called us to live, and our life style must reflect the character of God. In other words, sound Christian education and teaching places moral obligations on all believers. As we see in Titus chapter 1 vs. 11: “They must be stopped, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach – and that for the sake of dishonest gain.” This is particularly important today than ever before.  We must be on our guard against false teachings.
Paul is exhorting each one of us, regardless of our age to be:
  1. Temperate – a believer has to be free from all forms of excess or life dominating patterns through the control of the Spirit
  2. Dignified – a believer should reveal  personal dignity and seriousness of purpose that invite honor and respect
  3. Self-controlled - a spiritual quality that should be a part of the life of a believer
  4. Sound in faith, in love and in endurance
The degree to which sound training exists in a local church practically determines the health of that church. The word of God designates each one as a teacher and a student, a mentor and a mentee. The older generation, should pass on to the younger generation, the vital Christian faith by word and deed.

PRAYER

Oh Lord, help us to be good students/teachers and trainers in Your vineyard.  Set us free from our sins and cleanse us by the blood of Your son, Jesus Christ.  Amen
