Life Saving Faith

She came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your children can live on the rest.”

The widow has just lost her husband and she was now about to lose her two sons if she didn’t come up with a way to pay back her husbands debts to his creditor. She is pressed by the situation and goes to Elisha for help. Elisha, a man of faith, tells her to collect jars from her neighbors and fill them with the little olive oil that her husband owned and sell it so that she can make enough money to pay back these creditors. How many times in life do we feel that we are required to give more than we have to offer? We hear all the time, “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle” but deep down in the time heart of our struggle when are we are pressed the most, God asks us to have faith as small as a mustard seed, Mathew 17:20. There are two things we can look to within this passage. One, God is greater than our struggle. Two, God will provide.

The small jar of oil can signify the little faith that the widow had. It was the only thing that could save her family and it was the only thing she needed. She didn’t have any money to pay her husbands debt nor did she have any possessions. One thing she did have was her faith in God that that he was going to use this jar of oil to pay back the debt.

The scripture says in verse 6 that the oil stopped flowing after all the jars were filled. How can you fill many jars with oil when you only have one small jar to fill them with? We serve a great god who provides even with the littlest of things. He used this little jar of oil to satisfy this widow’s great need and save her family.

Life saving faith comes into action when we put all things aside and we focus on Christ. In our weakest times, we can put our faith in Gods promises that he will bear our burdens. When life brings us to desperation God uses our situations to show us how magnificent he is, how steadfast his love is. This story about this widow and her sons is so relevant in our time. The world today requires so much from us and we divide what little we have to satisfy all of the world’s demands. God has promised us his grace to carry us through every need.

PRAYER

Father in Heaven, we thank you Lord for always being the one we can run to when we are tried and broken. We thank you for being our strength to overcome all of life’s demands. We thank you Lord for supplying us with our needs whether great or small. Help us to always be grateful for the blessings you have given us and look to you in faith that you will provide for us. In Jesus name, Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Faith in Christ will allow us to see Gods sovereignty in every season of life.
