Lighted to Lighten

22 I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and no one shall shut; he shall shut, and no one shall open.

In this passage, we learn of God's promise to Eliakim, son of Hilkiah. The name Eliakim in Hebrew means "God raises up" or "God who establishes me".  In verses 20-24, Eliakim's advancement is described. Our Lord Jesus describes His own power as Mediator, in Rev. 3: 7, that He has the key of David. He is the Source of Light.

Mar Thoma Church Day is celebrated on Dec. 21 which is St. Thomas martyrdom. The great vision of our Church is that we are " Lighted to Lighten" the world. The motto of our church is that every marthomite is a missionary. Observing this day reminds us about the call and mission of the church. St. Thomas is the one who gave his life for the gospel. As we hold the tradition of St. Thomas, let us accept Jesus as Our Lord and God as Thomas proclaimed.

If the Lord has given you light He looks on that light with peculiar interest; for not only is to dear to Him as His own handiwork, but because it is like Himself for "He is Light". It is pleasant for the believer to know that, in this manner, God's eye is tenderly observant of that work of grace which He has begun. He never loses sight of the treasure which He has placed in our earthen vessels. The light within is the dawn of the eternal day.

We use lights to expose, make apparent. A Christian's life should so shine that no one could live with him a week without knowing the gospel. His conversation should be such that all who are around him can clearly perceive whose he is and whom he serves, and see reflected in his actions the image of Jesus. Lights are intended for guidance. We are to help those around us who are in the dark. We are to hold forth to them the Word of Life. We are to point sinners to the Saviour, and the weary to a divine resting place. Lights are also used for warning. On our rocks and shoals a lighthouse is sure to be erected. Christians should know that there are many false lights shown everywhere in the world, and therefore the right light is needed. The wreckers of Satan are always abroad, tempting the ungodly to sin under the name of pleasure; they hoist the wrong light. Let's shine the true light upon every dangerous rock, point out every sin and tell what it leads to, so that we can be clear of the blood of the human beings, and shine as light in the world. Lights also have a very cheering influence, and so have Christians. We ought to be comforters, with kind words on our lips and sympathy in our hearts; we should carry sunshine wherever we go, and spread happiness around.

PRAYER

O Lord Jesus, be our light throughout the whole of this day, for Your Light is the light of all people. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. - Edith Wharton
