Initiation of Children to the Faith and Practices

Luxuly Abraham
Long Island MTC, NY
6 for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts.” 7 Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline?

Our forefathers like Moses, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob endured a lot of troubles in their faith to attain the ultimate winning ticket to enter the kingdom of God. When God asked Abraham to travel to a foreign land he didn't doubt God but trusted God. We should remember how much struggle he endured to fight sin and win God’s grace.

It is stated in 1 Samuel 15:22, “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifice as much as in obeying the Lord? “ Whoever stayed obedient and faithful to God was blessed. When his children disobeyed, he corrected them. When Adam and Eve sinned, God punished them but he didn't completely destroy them (Mankind). God sent Jesus who struck back against sin. Our Lord wanted to strengthen his relationship with His children. At the cross Jesus gave Satan a fatal blow.  God is our compassionate Father  who corrected Adam & Eve, so that they won’t turn back to sin anymore.

Sin and sorrows are like baggage that hinders us from running the race of good faith, but in all this remember that Jesus our spiritual role model, who as a man had to fight temptations and go through a lot of contempt to fulfill His Father’s will.  Jesus was obedient to His father .

As Christian parents our ministry starts at home i.e. to bring up our children in faith and discipline. We ourselves have to set an example for our kids as faith without action is useless.

Proverbs 22:15 “Folly is bound up in the heart of the child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.” In disciplining  children  parents, should carefully consult the welfare of their souls, so that they can enter the kingdom of God. God disciplines us because we are his children. When we discipline our children it might be difficult for them at that moment. In Proverbs 22:6 it states “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

In their younger years, children might not understand why their parents put so much emphasis on prayer and why they set rules, but when they grow older they will realize.  So let us bring up our children in faith and discipline.

PRAYER

Lord we submit our children  into thy hands. Help us to nurture and discipline them according to Your will. Guide them and bless them with wisdom so that they do not fall into sin. Lord, use their lives to glorify you. Amen

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Let us submit our children into God’s hands so that they will be steadfast in faith, obedient to Him and pure at heart.
