Bearing Witness to the Gospel

 Acts 10:34-43

Dr. Ron Jacob

39 We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead.

In 2007 Nike introduced its new “Witness” marketing campaign celebrating basketball superstar LeBron James. The campaign honored James and acknowledged the fans worldwide who were “witnessing” his greatness, athleticism and incredible playing skills.

As a testament to his “witnesses” all around the world, sales of LeBron James’ basketball jersey have been astronomical. He has finished with the top-selling jersey six times since he began his career. This is just an example of the dedication of his loyal fans to bear witness to one of the top players of his generation.

In the bible passage we read, Peter is testifying about Jesus Christ, his Savior whom he “ate and drank with” after His resurrection. For many of us, our witness of Jesus Christ is not based on our memories of walking with Him or eating with Him. We unfortunately were not around during the time of Christ; however, our witness is based on understanding who He is in our lives. It is based on accepting the incredible gift of Salvation which was provided to us on the cross.

We as believers are witnesses to the work of God in our lives, in our homes and with our loved ones. We see it in every miracle he performs for us and with every blessing he provides for us. That is why, without shame we acknowledge Him as our Lord and Master.  By the way, don’t forget it is Peter , the one who denied Christ three times who is preaching these words. Never let your past mistakes hinder you from speaking the truth.

Our responsibility is to faithfully witness His love to the people around us. Is the testimony of ours even close to the witnessing we may do on behalf of our favorite athletes, actors or celebrities?

His commandment as Peter said, was to “preach to the people and to testify”. My friends, let our lives bear true witness of our Savior. Take an opportunity today to allow the world to witness Christ in you. You might be the only person to show that kind of grace and it may leave a lasting impression. Let us without reservation show the world the greatness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Thought for the day:

Let all my thoughts, words and actions today provide a true witness of the awesome power of Jesus Christ in my life.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing us to bear witness to the Gospel without shame and timidity. Please give us the strength to be a true witness of your love and grace every moment of this day. Amen!
