WIFE OF NOBLE CHARACTER
Proverbs 31: 10-31
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:30)
Faith and Practices of women in the family
The book of Proverbs is a compilation of different wisdom literature. This depicts the life experiences of the elders and that is to be cultivated in the successive generations for a successful living. Proverbs Chapter 31 is the teachings of King Lemuel's mother. From verses 10-31 is an ode (lyric- poem) to a capable wife with Noble Character. This portion describes the lolly and excellent character of a woman in the house. The word "She" uses fourteen times in this chapter to glorify the woman. She is precious than jewels. tier husband trusts her, her children glorify her, the poor and the needy extol her for her generosity. In many ways she is model to other women.
She governs discipline in the family: Vs. 15 says her day begins while it is still night. Vs. 28 mentions, she disciplines her children to rise up at right time. She is industrious, hard working and diligent in bringing up her children and all her household. This chapter emphasizes maintaining the importance of discipline in the family especially in nurturing the children. Without discipline no one can become a disciple of Jesus Christ. Faith cannot be implanted and nurtured without discipline. Only a disciplined woman can bring up her children with disciplined character. Paul says in 2 Tim 1:5, Timothy received the sincere faith from his grand mother Lois and his mother Eunice.
To what extend are we able to nourish our children with the importance of the word of God, faith in Christ and in line with our heritage? We may be busy with their physical nourishment, but we need to concentrate and extend time for their spiritual nourishment also. Verse. 30 says — we spend enough time and money to enhance our external charm and beauty but very little time to fear the Lord and leach Godly wisdom to our children.
Her Excellence surpasses all excellent women:How did she excel all other women? Verse 20, says, "She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hand to the needy". Her compassion, kindness, inner strength and dignity surpass all other women. Her fear of the Lord and wholehearted devotion to God is praise worthy. She earned wisdom by her devotion to God, and then she built her house with that wisdom and witnessed her faith in the community.
Prayer:
Lord enlightens us with your wisdom; strengthen our heart with your spirit. Excel us with your grace and faith. Prompt us to raise our children in lour faith. Amen.
